Favourite artists of Magic: the Gathering, part three: Jason Chan.
Jason Chan is the artist that fuels my creativity in costume design. When he draws something, you can be 99% sure I want to cosplay it. There’s a liveliness in his drawings that can hardly be rivalled by any other artist. The colours, the composition, the expressions of the characters he draws - it all works together in a form of synergy that I feel is very rare indeed.
He may possibly be my favourite M:tG artist of all time, but there’s so many other artists I love I’d be hard-pressed to actually come right out and say who my absolute favourite is. Chan comes close, though.
It was really difficult to pick only three pieces of art for this entry, but in the end I managed.
I love the fires raging on around Chandra, with her gazing at the viewer, wordlessly saying “here I am, try and put my fires out, I dare you”. She’d possibly throw in a “motherfucker” for good measure, feisty woman she is. And then she’ll burn the shit out of you with her fire, or put her boot to your posterior, anyway.
Fires of Undeath - well, we all know why I love this art so much. I mean, I cosplayed it. Everything from her dress and bearing to the arcane fire sprouting from her hands shouts ‘evil and I am relishing it’. If she were to smile, no doubt she’d reveal longer, pointier canines than is usual.
Thraben Valiant is a whole other slice of pie, though. This woman isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. Bother her, and she’ll make you wish you were never born, with that whip of hers. Aside from her fierceness, what I adore about this art is her pose and the composition. It’s not about her face - it’s about her weapon and her obvious proficiency with it.
That, ultimately, is what speaks to me in Chan’s art. It’s a perfect blend of the focal point, background and flavour.
